Does "unmetered" really exist?

I have seen a few hosting sites offering unmetered bandwidth. Does this really exist? I have a new project in my head and I will need crazy amounts of bandwidth to make it work... if an unmetered server doesn't actually exist, where can I find one with huge amounts of bandwidth? Any links will be appreciated.

Definitely does not exist; there is always a clause if you move too much. I sold a site using well over a terabyte a month a while back and it was friggin expensive. Ended up going with Pair.

terabyte? Wow, what kind of site was it?

I guess I would be needing like 100gb per day... any suggestions?

Just remember that ultimately you get what you pay for. If you were doing 100GB per day (and it was exactly the same throughout the day with no peak times), you would be saturating nearly 8 T1 lines. Even at the best wholesale pricing, a provider is going to pay at least $100 per month per T1 (and that's JUST for bandwidth, doesn't cover rent, servers, electricity, etc.). So even conservatively if you find anything under $500/month for that much traffic, the ISP is loosing money and will soon be out of business if that's the kind of pricing they offer.

hmmm... interesting, didn't know that bandwidth was so expensive. So, where can I check out the prices for servers with big bandwidth? The most I have found is 1200 gb per month, I'm sure there must be something better than that

Of course that's not really 10Mbit either, since that's just the theoretical max for the port. Probably more like 7.5Mbit in real world use.

But when I would have said "it's on a 7.5Mbit ethernet connection" you'd probably ask what kind of weird connection that is :)

Fryman, maybe you should get 10 different hosting locations, to spread out the traffic? That way you can scale it up or down as needed

Well, that would be 10 times more complicated:D

I would rather just have one dedicated server ready to share the bandwidth. But, as I said, I am looking for one that offers loads of it.

    1 AMD XP 2800+
    1 mb RAM
    120 G HD

500 GB bandwidth @ Pair... not saying it is cheap, but you'd be lucky to find a more reliable host: $599 /mo

    http://www.pair.com/services/dedicated/qs3.html

Their data center connection is sick, but you'll have to negotiate if you're talking about 3 TB per month so you don't pay their standard $2.95 overage charge per GB.

Yup, my monthly bill was over 3 grand with everything... but you can always negotiate if you're moving that much.

That's only a 100mbit line though.. $999 to start with the Gigabit line. And if you have a high traffic site, you don't want your pipe to be the bottleneck during peak hours... bandwidth is money... if you're moving that much of it you must be making it back so why scrimp on the provider when it brings reliability into question? As Shawn pointed out, bandwidth has a fixed cost to a provider.. there is no way around that cost. If you're using it, someone will be paying for it. So why would one place charge 7 grand and one place charge $999? There has got to be a difference... like peak burst ability, right?

I use Superb and I am very happy so far. You can get a colo deal there for about 100 per month for 1500gb. I have 3 servers there. I hope to get 1/2 rack within a year.

    http://www.superb.net they also rent dedicateds.
