Does this particular viral marketing strategy work?

    Hey folks,

Would like to get advice from anyone who had implemented this particular viral marketing strategy before.

    1. Offer a free gift contest draw on website (this gift is something physical with real value. Not an eBook)
    2. Visitors sign up to join the contest draw. Winners announce every week
    3. After they sign up, they are given a unique referral link
    4. They are encouraged to get their friends to sign up via their referral link
    5. Because the more friends they refer who sign up, the higher their chances of winning

If you have tried this particular strategy before, does it work out for you? Do people actually refer their friends so that they stand a higher chance of winning the free gift?

Do you know of any website using similar strategy? I would like to see their flow and implementation.

In theory, it sounds good and dandy. But seriously, I'm not too sure if it works out in real life. I for one never signs up for contest. And I never bother to refer anyone to anything. But then again, I don't buy lottery tickets either. And I am not a representation of the general population.

    What's your take?
