Been having a crack at my first directory using the Free PHP Directory Script and tried to make it look a bit different (not sure if its worked or not) what do you guys think? It's only my first toe in the water for a directory and really I should have gone with the phpld one instead, but at least I can use this as a free directory or something and learn from there. All the category's etc aren't finished yet and its in my sig
Yup catagories aren't finished yet, its a shame it hasn't got anymore options eg for users to select recipicle link etc etc (first lesson learnt already lol)
i see a future for you.... Your first directory and your not even thinking of using someone elses designs but your own.... im impressed, take your time and do it right.. much success to you... thx malcolm
looks fine to me.... should definitely consider having sub-categories and the display of top-ranked sub-categories beneath your top-level categories on the main page. - might also want to clearly define your right menu, by having a distinct menu panel - personally, wld always prefer for the 'add url' menu be visible on the top of the page, so that visitors do not need to scroll down to see it. This, to me, helps encourage submissions Good start & good luck =)
Thanks for the comments and good advice I think I might start it again and use phpld instead as the script I'm using at the moment doesn't really have many functions etc (can't complain it is free after all). Like malcolm1 said "take your time and do it right" which even though this is my first attempt its better to do things right the first time around than end up regretting not doing it properly later
Unfortunately the top banner isn't showing for me. It's an interesting colour scheme though, certainly different.
Obelia what browser and resolution are you viewing it on? I've tested it on ie6 ie7 and ff at 800x600 1024x768 and 1280x1024 and although it goes all scrollable at the lower resolutions its all still there. I've had some people linking up to it already, but if you are reading this thread it may be a good idea to wait until it is finished as I'm going to look at the phpld route tonight as it appears to have a lot more functionality. Hopefully I'll be able to keep a similar (yet improved very improved) look for it. Then starts the dreaded link building I guess lol will take years to get up there with the big guns out there, but good things come to those who wait I see lots of link clouds / directories that have been running for a short period of time but have high pr, is there any kind of secret that I'm missing?
I'm seeing the banner now. Perhaps I was just looking at an ISP-cached version? Possibly the people who set these up have just bought lots of links, or placed them from already high-ranking websites that they run.
