I am going to be submitting a new sitemap index file to yandex, yahoo, bing, ask and google. Due to technical issues I can't call the index sitemap.xml Does it matter at all to engines if its called something like sitemap2.xml or sitemapindex.xml? the sitemap index will contain links to a few large xml.gz files that contain the actual site urls. Thanks
What ever you decide to call it, be sure and log into google Webmaster Tools and point them toward the file.
Also, use the Robot.txt file for SE that do not support Google Webmaster Tools, like the rest. See http://www.catanich.com/sitemaps-via-robots-txt.asp for example on how to set this up.
