Does the length of your domain name registeration affect PR?

    Hi,
My Registrar just told me that the length of registeration you have on a domain will affect the Google PR.
so a domain registered 7 years ahead will gain higher PR then one registered only a year ahead.

Of course he said it's not the main factor but it's still part of the factors they take.

Is this true? Anyone else heard of this?

How many years the domain is registered for does not have any effect on PR. but if you have an old domain regged in 1995s etc, it is very beneficial for serps....

Yep - that's what I know of as well and I am in the SEO field for a while...

The weird thing was is it was the support people on the registrar that told me that and not the sale people if you know what I mean...

A certain Google patent stated that they may use domain reg length as an indicator of spam. For example if your site looks like a spam site and you have only registered it for a year then its even more likely to be spam.

If you don't have a spam site then it makes no difference at all. It certainly won't affect your PR.

    Edit: Patent is here.

Yes, agree with the above. The domain age helps with the 'trust' factor towards a domain in the SERPS, though it's nothing to do with PR.

One thing to note about the hundreds of white papers and patents... The fact they have this technology does not mean they are using it. No one but Google knows.

short and old domains are good for serps, as most of short length domains and booked long back and running they may have high pr, even short domains with out backlinks dont get any extra pr then other.

I don't think this is true.
A very old domain name without alot of backlinks would still get very low PR..i believe?

More than the length of the domain registration, the age of the domain is important. The age of a domain gives the appearance of longetivity and might rank well in the rankings but it doesn't have an effect on PR.

Yeah, I think they might have confused domain age with link age.

Domain age can have some effect on SERPs, especially when it comes to sandboxed. Not sure, but think that google also penalizes for purchased domains as well as just registered domains- it's the same to them.

Also, think that having the site as active, vs parked, makes a difference to for domain aging.

no, it won't affect your rank in any way.
it could be a plus if your domain also describes your services due to its lenght
