Regardless of content does the domain name effect search engine results?

If you had two different websites with the same content but one of the sites domain name had a site keyword in it and the other site did not. Would the site with the keyword in the domain have much improved results in search engine rankings?

    Thanks

    ff.

Ofcourse, it carries alot of weight in ranking the sites.
In google it does affect alot.. Keyword in URL is the best trick at this stage
    here's the example for you
    Keyword: Buy rimonabant
    Ranking : #1 in google
    URL: www.buyrimonabant.co.uk
    Backlinks: 0
Age of site : 1 Month (but its on #1 since 20 days i.e. on 10th day it was on #1 and it is getting daily 100 visits from google only)

So, its best to hav a keyword in URL

could the domain be a re-direct site to another url and still get high search engine ranking?

say my keywords were 'buy rimonabant'

my main site is 'cheapmeds.com' and my competitors site is 'rimonabant.com'

Could I purchase 'Buyrimonabant.com' and have it redirect to 'cheapmeds.com?

Besides possible trademark problems any other issues?

    *website names are not real*

    Yep,

It sure does. I made a site with a "keyword" in the domain. I did no SEO on it and it went ballistic in the SERPS in 2 months from publishing. Sold it for a lot of profit all thanks to the keyword in the domain.

no, 99% of the time google will only index the page which it finally lands on, so if you 301'd Buyrimonabant.com to cheapmeds.com then only cheapmeds.com would be indexed.

Yes it is true that keyword rich domain names have a big weight on SE Ranks but I suggest that instead of buying a new domain that is keyword rich focus on optimizing you current site on your current domain. Domains are one of the many factors needed in ranking. good luck.

I agree that keywords in your domain name play a significant role in your rankings. In fact, I was party to a test (at a membership site) where the domain name was the only part of the site that included the keywords, and it was still ranked for the keywords (although low) within a week in the main SEs.
