Does submitting to article directories cause duplicate content?

I am wondering if submitting an article or blog post to an article directory such as EzineArticles, Article City, Go Articles, etc, will cause issues with duplicate content?

It would seem that especially content that has not been indexed yet would be filtered out of the search results, since the article directory is going to rank higher than my blog, and probably be indexed sooner as well.

If this is the case, what is the value of submitting to article directories?

I did do a little research on the forums (as to avoid duplicate content.. lol..) and found this post, but I'm still a little unclear.

As for the suggestion of changing the material, how much does it have to be changed before it will no longer show up as duplicate content(if that be the case) ? For some of the stuff I have written, it seems that changing it too much can change the whole dynamic of an article. (maybe that is just me being too attached to my own words..)

    Thanks a lot!

there are different views on this matter

personally i would avoid submitting articles are exactly equal to your blog posts. As you said Google and other search engines attribute paternity based on pagerank, so if the article directory has a higher page rank, even it published the content after you did, it will be seen as the author.

What you could do, instead, is to write a couple of articles just for the submission. This would make sure that you avoid duplicate content penalties and at the same time it could give some exposure to your blog. Make you sure you put a footer on the article with a short bio and link back to your blog.

Yeah, that's a pretty good idea. I think I personally need some more content on a couple of the blogs I'm working on before I start giving content away. :) For me that is a really tough decision. On one hand if the content is good enough, it is going to leave people wanting more of what you have written, at least in a best case scenario. Then again, if it is that good to begin with you'd hate to have it indexed for and hosted on somebody else's sight and people clicking on their ads instead of yours. I suppose like anything it's a choice you gotta make sometimes.
