Does soft 404 erros can harm my website rankings?

    I am getting few "Soft 404 Errors" in my webmaster account for one of my site.

    My question to you is
    Does "Soft 404 Errors" can harm my rankings anyway?

    No, it won't harm your site. But make your own 404 page with links to your main page.

    Currently I have retired those soft 404 error pages to my home page..

    Is it right way?
    or Customize 404 is the only solution?

    301 redirection is good while pages are under construction or showing 404.

    Yeah customize 404 is the better solution.. than default error pages....
