    When a search engine craws your website it follows links on each of you pages, the sitemap is there to make sure the crawl bot does not miss any pages. The bot looks for 2 files before it starts to crawl though, robots.txt and sitemap.txt/html/xml/rss etc links that are found by the bot are then matched against those in the sitemap
