Does site design matter?

Hello, I'm creating a landing page for my product. Basically, it's just headlines, texts, and tables.
Do I really NEED those fancy graphics?
    Why, or why not?

Well since I design webpages, you may see my answer as biased, but I think that you will sell a lot more if your landing page looks professional. You don't need cheesy golden text and super large buttons, just a professional looking design (which shouldn't cost too much). If you have a nice looking design, people will be more likely to trust you.

yes ,site design does matters a lot when you specifically selling products, customer must find they wants in one scan of page, so your site design should be good.

I agree with all that has been said here. A professional design will make you look more competent as a business person.

Simple design can look professional, so the small amount of work it takes would be worth the effort :)

Fancy graphics helps sometimes, it really depends what the site is used for. But you can hardly ever go wrong with a web 2.0 design.

Graphics in the correct positions can help, they can act as eye catchers and if everything is situated well, the header, introduction, images..... it can funnel them down to what you want them to do.

As the old saying goes, you only get 1 first impression. The design of your website may be a deciding factor for potential buyers to buy your product or not so I would definitley recommend making it look professional.

Especially when selling a product, design is important. Fancy things aren´t necessary, but your page needs to look professional, reliable and clean. When buying products from someone you can´t meet in person, design is one of the first things a buyer looks at.

Look at your page from a buyer´s point of view. First impression is everything.

Yes, it does matter. It doesn't need to be over the top, but you need a stylish design to keep the viewer on the page. If the page were just headlines, texts and tables with no real design flow, it would look very unprofesional and might even drive away some viewers.

Unless you make your product price cheap and ensure the visitor sees that price immediately - then yes, a nice looking website design could make all the difference between a sale and a non-sale.

Ok, say I have a typical landing page for my product, that is a single column with text and appropriate headlines.
If I don't have any showy graphics, will this lessen their interest, even though I have a good sales copy?

In the US, at least, everything is about appearance. If you look rich, you are rich. If you look smart, you are smart. That's not the way it is - that's just the way we've been programmed. Something about marketing companies always selling us more crap.

The point is, the average US-based client that lands on your page is going to evaluate you based on your page design first, content second. They have to read the content. They don't need to "read" the design.

Imagine this: you have a choice between a Honda Accord or a BMW 3-Series. They're both the same price (for you), they both have the same features inside, and you know that Honda recently started creating more BMW-esque body styles. Do you go for the Honda? Of course not, you go for the BMW. Why? Because no matter how much Accords try to look like BMWs, they can't completely capture the lines.

I don't design web pages, but if I did, I would always aim for that extra notch above perfection - the "BMW" level, if you will. Sure, you can sell with "Accord" pages, and even "Kia" pages, but why would you?

Just words and texts looks unprofessional and like the person doesn't know the first thing about websites and design. Not to mention like someone that is trying to scam you out of your money... so my suggestion, get a good design.

In general the website design itself does not matter, but the navigation should be clean. The buttons should be intuitive and people should be able to do what they expect.
