If I host multiple domains on one HostGator account, will that hurt my rankings?

I don't think so Lots of web design companies host client sites on their own account and they don't seem to suffer.

It might depend on if they are all in the same niche, and you're linking between all of them. If they're all on the same IP and linking to each other, Google may discount the links.

    No not at all...

if you are afraid ... then i suggest to take a dedicated IP along with your Shared hosting

It will be equal to hosting on a dedicated server

actually it depends on so many factors, but i don't think it will hurt your ranking if used wise and make sure if you cross linking a lot of sites you own and host on the same shared hosting that: it deserve the linking sites :)

I think the only thing that might have an effect is heavy inter-linking between sites on the same IP address.

As long as you are following Google's guidelines, you shouldn't have a problem hosting multiple sites on a single server. If you are trying to have multiple sites as part of a linking strategy, I would suggest finding several low-cost servers and hosting sites on each and then linking away from that server. Stick with one-way links though... since you are crossing into a gray area by trying to influence Google rankings.

i don't think share hosting is a problem for google ranking, most of the websites using share hosting due to it's cheaper cost

It will decrease effectiveness of crosslinking - but the rest is OK

No. Unless you're on the same class C IP range as a bunch of spammers. But, even that is speculation.

Getting dedicated ips for each site may help, plus it is not very expensive.

I have used this strategy before. I didn't really notice a plus or minus to my site's performance. You have to believe that Google can track this.

it can hurt you if there are a lot of spam sites hosted on the shared server. It won't really hurt your rank directly but there will be indexing problems because Google seems to have less trust for sites abusing it, and since they have no way of knowing which domains are owned by the same users for spam sites that try to trap the googlebot, they resort to ip banning or categorizing. So while they won't ban you or punish you directly, you may notice the frequency that they re-index and spider your site decrease. Look at free webhosts, the sites on there are a good indicator of this.
