Does MSN ranking mean anything?

    Hi,

In just two months of launching my site, I managed to secure the #1 position on the keyword "free url submission" (for www.nexcomp.com/weblaunch). Unfortunately, I have not noticed a significant increase in referrals from MSN. I know this is a moderately popular keyword, so I should see a noticeable increase in traffic.

I have some very good MSN rankings that do not generate a significant amount of traffic.

I have a #1 keyword in both GG and MSN..
GG brings me about 50 uniques and MSN brings me less than 20 ..
but i think MSN will pick up soon ..

I have several highly searched phrases that are #1 in Google, Yahoo and MSN and the percentages are still 80% 8% 6% respectively.

MSN has a looooong way to go. Their biggest strength (and probably only in regards to SEO) is that you can get to that top spot quickly but in the long run Google is still the one.

Since MSN only represents a signicantly smaller portion of the search population compared to google I'm sure the effects of high rankings in the MSN serps are relatively in-significant compared to the effects of similar rankings in google serps.

that being said - Being #1 in MSN serps has to be better than being #50 in MSN serps.

Having recently attained #1 positions in MSN serps for several keywords I can attest to the fact that the increase in MSN serp generated traffic in NOT significant.

I was sorely disappointed to find that even the #1 spot in the MSN serp generated insuggnificant traffic compared even to 2nd page google serp ranking for the same term.

I find this severly disappointing as I was hopeful that MSN search would provide an additional channel of traffic for websites. So far the effect of MSN seems to be neglagible.

    -----------------------

Perhaps there is a demographics dynamic at work here -

Are there any particular industries that do well with MSN traffic...?

would it be bad for me to say that maybe #1-10 spot on msn is not relevant if your site is generating you income in your demografics! call me silly!
example: if you droped a biz card on the floor of the mall in your home town and it was picked up by a paying customer would it be relevant if 1 out of 2000 biz cards only generated busines buy dropping them on floors of local malls.

I have no idea of WTF you are talking about

All I can say is that I have a pay-per-lead program that is top-ranked at MSN. All my traffic comes from there. Not much traffic, but enough to send $1,300 last month to my bank account while I was seeing TV.

And this month it will send almost $2,000

Don't focus on the "big" engines and forget the small ones. These can bring good $$ also

My newest site has a couple #1's on MSN and only rakns for obscure phrases on Google.

Similar to Yfs1's findings I get over 85% traffic from Google and the rest from AOL, Ask, Wanadoo, Yahoo and MSN (pretty much in that order). Yes that includes a big AdWords campaign but also a reasonable Overture campaign.

I get the idea that MSN/Yahoo rankings combined won't get anywhere near Google's referals soon (18 months away at least me thinks).

I wish you were wrong on this Tops.. but you're not.

This month the SE traffic to my bread & butter site comes from MSN, Yahoo, Google in that order with MSN sending over 10 times the traffic that GG does. However last month (before GG apparently intrduced an algo change) the SE traffic was split evenly across the board for the big 3 and I was experiencing traffic levels that I thought was impossible to achieve.

I now believe that if you don't rank well with GG, you're missing out on a huge amount of traffic.

Fryman - AWESOME! glad to hear it!

Its funny - even though I get VERY LOW traffic from MSN I see a lot of conversions from the MSN traffic - haven't sat down with the numbers in a little while but I'd say the conversiona is about 3 times better than the Google traffic.

But I mentioned it elsewhere - which is better:

    5% of googles 400 visits (20)
    or 15% of MSNs 100 visits (15)

I used to say the google (20)

but DUH the answer is the Search Engines (35) forget where it comes from - I'll take it anyway I can get it ;)

Same here, I'm at #1, and #4 for two keywords, and they aren't really bringing in anything. :\
