I believe this quote will tell you: "Why does a merged Microsoft-Yahoo pose such a threat to Google? It's an unstable situation. But the theoretical issue is the concentration of Microsoft's resources and its history, combined with the very large share that it would have in certain applications—like instant messaging and email—that could be used essentially to break the internet and diminish choice." I was reading it earlier on yesterday and thought it would be nice to hear from the floor, what you think. Source article
No they have to make it compete with google before they can be a threat. Microsoft ruins sites when they buy them
Microsoft has no monopoly in this niche, the honors go to Google. Microsoft and Yahoo merger is still much smaller than what Google controlled but it will help as there is a more credible force for Google to pay attention to.
So is MSN and Yahoo, their disadvantages are not that they are small but that they are not efficiently run.
Absolutely. Microsoft! poses the first real threat to Google in years. Sure Google is still going to have a relative monopoly but don't count Microsoft! out. Live Search has also been slowly gaining marketshare on its own. And combining YPN and AdCenter makes a solid advertising platform that shouldn't be ignored, especially in display advertising, in which Google is playing catch-up. In fields other than traditional web advertising, Microsoft already has a huge leg up on Google. Look at how closely knit Microsoft and AT&T are, and you'll see that Microsoft is in great position to do quite well in mobile display advertising. They're also the only ones with in-game advertising opportunities with the XBOX360, which shouldn't be ignored - ever noticed the movie trailers on the billboards in Need For Speed? Also at play here are recent talks between NewsCorp and Microsoft, which could eventually bring MySpace into using AdCenter giving MS control over all ads on Facebook, MySpace, and Digg. Google blamed their poor Q4 performance on their deal with MySpace, and soon after talks between MS and NewsCorp began. Its been rumored that if MS needs more cash to buy Yahoo, it could very well come from teaming up with NewsCorp. Now look at Yahoo's traffic base and what it brings to the table: Yahoo's dominates email, and dominates in Asia, especially compared to Google's Asian presence. And look at who uses Yahoo - less experienced users who are extremely loyal and have had their Yahoo email accounts since before Gmail existed. And even though Google gets more total queries, Yahoo gets more traffic than Google (as does MSN). And as anyone here who does affiliate marketing knows, Yahoo and MSN users are way more likely to purchase something. Microsoft has the products and business connections to take on Google, but is seeking to buy a huge user base to sell these products to. Yahoo fits the bill. Google knows its going to be a problem for them, hence why they are trying to fight the merger with their laughable anti-trust claims. Its going to be a rough period ahead for Google, not only from Microsoft! but from Powerset when it finally launches, and potentially from Cuill, although Cuill is still in stealth. If I've learned anything in the last ten years its this: don't bet against Microsoft.
It should not affect Google really, Google is most likely the most used search engine. When you install firefox you get a firefox google page not a Firefox yahoo page
Microsoft is feeling the heat because of Google cloud offline docs app. This is one of the main reasons why they want to challenge Google in search
This can change if Yahoo persuades Firefox to put in a Yahoo search instead. It all depends on whats the benefits to Firefox.
Google dominates 60% of search engines market. Yahoo - 20%. MSN - 10%. If Yahoo and MSN become as one - 20% + 10% = 30%, Google is still strong!
It'll definitely affect Google. Google has been losing some of its top talent for a while now and putting Microsoft's technology behind Yahoo's scale will provide good results. Yahoo has great potential, but it has suffered from clueless management and lost opportunities. Marketers stick with Google because there is nowhere else they can reach so many of their prospects. About Firefox- Firefox will never cooperate with Microsoft if you realize its Netscape background and open source commitment. Yahoo doesn't have the cash to compete with Google about Firefox placement.
Google is still very powerfull, but it will be very good if Yahoo + Microsoft become a good concurrent... because google becomes very lazy... especially support... especially adsense... they main tactics is ignore user requests... it is frustrating.
Of course it poses a threat: that is why Microsoft wants it completed, and that is why Google is trying to stop it!
Microsoft won't find it easy to swallow a company the size of Google and doing so may invite so many anti trust suits that I doubt anyone even contemplated it.
