I got a review copy of a linkwheel from one of the providers on DP. To be honest, in order to get it to work effectively, you need to promote each property on the wheel. So each property needs backlinks, because if all you have is a plain and simple wheel it's not going to work effectively.

Authority means nothing here - it doesn't matter that the web page is on an authority domain - what you need are backlinks to make it work. So promote your wheel by doing simple things like blog comments and submitting a couple of articles and you should get a lot more out of it.

I have been working with elitesystem on linkwheels. I must say that this guy is a professional. He has completed more than 10 linkwheels on my niche in the last month. I can see great results.

So what are linkwheels? Just another great method to get noticed

This is not new. Google penalizes artificial SERP and PR manipulation whenever they are detected ever since. There might be some linkwheel experts who know how to avoid detection for a good while, but sooner or later (depending on "quality" of the link wheel) it will be detected and cause loss of rankings.

There is only one strategy which results undetectable by a search engine algorithm and it is not exactly a wheel. It needs al least 24 (more is better) web sites, a very specific linking strategy, a unique article for every site and a lot of work.

In my experience link wheels work no better than good backlinks and actually not as well. I have tried both. I wasted $299 on a complex link wheel with no results. With good backlinks, I can move my websites to #1 on Google within a few months.

well google will penalize if you are careless. A good linkwheel can do wonders and it all depends. I have had numerous experiences with it and i think it is definitely worth it. Recently, I have come across another service and i will be offering that on dp shortly. I will be able to give you more than 10k backlinks for a small fee :D sweet!

A very interesting and intriguing part that i found while researching on google patents for ranking

As per point 59, if links are there for short time then you can get penalized, so this means it is not a good idea to get forum/community links, since if the webmasters decide to delete a lot of them, then you can be in trouble, since your linkage data will show lot of movement of links in (+) and (-). So if you are creating backlinks from linkwheels, then manage to post / contribute to the community and stay within the webmasters radar, else they may delete your one post blogs/articles on the Web 2.0 properties and you will get penalised for too many links coming up and going down.

As per Point 60, the page from where you are getting backlinks also needs to be updated over certain period of time and then penalizing or boosting the ranking if the content is not updated or vice-versa. This also means getting some backlinks from linkwheels will do no good, but you need to post / contribute content and your link needs to get fresh content around it too over a certain period of time, else the link value gets devalued. :D
