There's thinking that these links are actually quite devalued but I think they still have a place...

They have their value, maybe they are less important as they used to be...

They work great if you are posting in a forum that is relevant to what you do. For example, if you have a site about video games then it is better that you post in forums that talk about games. DP is somewhat an exception and the sig links here may not hold that much weight, but they are great for traffic.

Banless is right. You should really only be in forums you are willing to participate in because they represent some interest you have.

Pick a forum relevant to your interests/niche and enjoy the traffic first and serps later!

It's been my observation that Google only sprinkles a few forum links your way when calculating the "quality" links that point to you - less as time goes on it seems.

Currently I'm only seeing one or two links when I know there is hundreds.

I seen that google picked up my links in DP but only when the are on pages related to my site, so yes, forum links are valuable too.

I also agree with banless. Links on forums are not that valued but they still count as back links. And in SEO, every little thing counts.

Yes they have value, but seems the value is less than a link form a site with relevant content.

You get links, and get spidered quickly if the forums are active.
If the person carrying the link has profile PR, all the better.

Mostly for targetted traffic purposes though..

yes it does. but the problem is that there are many outbound link on that particular page i.e. many people have their signature links as well in that page.

I think it would be much better to mix your link in your post like saying hey learn seo from seo book www.freeseobook.blogspot.com its free..you know what I mean? I have a feeling that search engine creators may have discountet much of the weight from the forum signature, since everybody started to use it, but if you would place your link inside the post I think it would gain some value, because they may think that somebody is mentioning it in the forum as a good recource..
