    Hi,

Does adding a link to Google makes the website Google friendlier?
We were recommended to do so, so we added links to our website
    ( www.webonlinegambling.com )

    Thanks :)

No, external links can only have a negative effect if to the wrong website.

People used to link to all the major search engines and thought it helped. I do not think it ever helped

Surely it doesn't have an effect, would be funny if it did though lol.

I have read that linking out to authority sites could help your own site in rankings and PR... I think it is because google notices you are linking out to quality sites

I have heard this does help but I'm not sure if anyone can confirm it. Has anyone heard Matt Cutts say anything about this?

This is an old myth. There is no truth at all to it.

Linking out to any site has no affect on your rankings unless you overdo it then it could affect them in a negative way because it will look like a spammy site. Getting links pointing to your site from authority sites is what affects your rankings.

i think it cant help your site.. because everybody can link to authority sites. For example a man who have bad or penalized site can link to authority sites too.

External links will not improve anything. If it used to improve a site's ranking, then people will start to put many links to sites like google, msn, yahoo etc on every page of their sites.

No unless your site is related to Google, but the act of linking to an "authority" site does not help a sites rankings just because it's an "authority" site.

If you have a page about Google or search engines and you link to Google with relevant anchor text then that anchor text will help your page with it's SERPs.

So if you have a Search Engine Optimization page and link from that page with anchor text "Google the Greatest Search Engine" then you help with SERPs relating to these words for your page-

    Google
    Greatest
    Search
    Engine

The same is true if you link to any relevant site that's not been penalised using relevant anchor text, it's not the linking out, it's the anchor text (very important on page SEO factor) that can help a pages SERP. So it's no use linking to Google with the anchor text "Google the Greatest Search Engine" if your page is about Fishing, it won't help.

Linking to relevant sites comes at a cost and that's less PR/link benefit available to spread around the rest of your site, if your sending links to external sources your site as a whole looses PR. PR leaks from a site through external links, wrote about it a while back here http://www.seo-consultant-services.co.uk/leaking-pagerank-pr.html so won't explain it again.

Hard to prove conclusively, but I think linking to relevant sites with relevant anchor text helps more than linking to say your home page with the same anchor text (both help since out going anchor text is an important factor), so I recommend linking to a relevant site with relevant anchor text (relevant to your pages SERPs), but don't go overboard, you need your PR/link benefit for others pages on your site as well.
