Does link directory submission really help?

As a webmaster that has started a new site/project do you consider link directory submission as a part of your campaign?

If I was to start a new site with 10+ pages of keyword rich content on a certain nich and only submit it to google and webmaster tools and link directories only. How many link directories would I need to submit to before I started ranking number 1 spot in the SERPS for my keywords?

How many link dirs would you submit to and how many do you need to submit to if you was to only submit it to link dirs? Although I do article marketing etc etc too. Look forward to your replies!

Well, in theory the links you would have in some link directories would help. But if those links are "dead" and no one clicks on them they are just not important for you. So you would pay some attention on link directories, but only to those that would send traffic to you!

What :S Your comment doesn't make sense. No one clicks a link directory link anyway. I guess by the lack of response no one really knows. I've spent a lot of time submitting to link directories for most of them not to show up in Google as a backlink. That is all link dirs are for really. For backlinks. Link dirs never send you traffic from people clicking so you obviously have no idea what you are talking about. How the hell are you supposed to know which ones will and wont send you traffic? So you simply just submit to it anyway.

But how many link dirs should I submit to if I was to only submit to link dirs only before I started seeing my site come up on the 1st page of Google for whatever keyword I was going for? That's what I want to know. And can anyone actually give me a decent coherrent answer?

Yes its still helps but not that much. Since directory submission waits for approval. I mean you're not sure if your site will be on their list. Unlike other link building process. They provide an instant link like forums posting. :)

Your site would even be dropped ranking from Google if you submit some unknown "directories".

Okay but how many link dir submissions are needed to get a PR3 if link dir submitting is all you've done? Which leads me to what link dirs are best to use first of all?

What are the top link dirs to submit to? The top ones.

Not all directories are created equal. Some free directories will help but it is a great idea to submit to some good paid directories as well.
