we want to create posts on Twitter and posts on Facebook that trigger shares. The is to link bait users to the point where the reaction spreads outside of the walls of Facebook and Twitter. When readers begin mentioning your link bait posts on their private blogs or websites, effectively carrying your message to domains outside of the social networking area, that is when the magic of link baiting can really be seen, but it won’t be seen unless you have something of great value and quality to offer.

Target the social media to make it successful. Exciting and controversial issues are played well in such sites.

Know who you are going to target before you create the link bait.

For example, if you are targetting people who like technology, use sites like Followerwonk (google it) and Technorati to find blogs and people who might want to share the thing you are creating. Put this list into a spreadsheet with their contact details.

Make sure you've got quite a few people targeted (say - at least 30)

    Now, make your link bait

When that's done, write a concise email to each of your targets mentioning (say, infographic) what you've just made. Make sure you point out that it is highly relevant to them (don't spam)

    Repeat for all your contacts

If you've made something reasonably decent, you should get a few, high quality, editorial links out of it

REMEMBER: you'll have also established contact with people who will share other things you make in the future as well
