The Google sitemap has a limit of 50,000 URLs and 10 MegaBytes per site map. It's possible to create an index of the sitemap pages which allows for a total of 1000 sitemaps.
Sitemap files can be compressed using gzip, reducing bandwidth consumption.

You've have to have a LOT of pages to have a 10MB sitemap. I have about 4300 pages in one, and it's not even 1MB

I've actually experienced it. Just about 1.5MB of sitemap file, and the .txt file was dropping letters for no reason. eg: instead of image2.jpeg, it became image2.j

I had to manually edit it.

Well, many sitemap generator programs can automatically split links into multiple xml sitemap files (e.g. when passing 20,000 or 50,000 thousand links)

I need ways to put about 15,000 links in my sitemap, found one that does only 1000 at max, but thats only a few kilobytes, never hit megabytes yet
