Does it take time?

    Hey guys,
I have been working on building my site for the last year. I have some very pertinent content on the home page and a bunch of links to my site. If I do a search for "art contests" on Google I am no where to be found. Does it just take time or am I not doing something?

    best regards,
    Joe

Is your term "art contests" linked from other sites or directories?

After a year you should be at least on the radar.

Have you been able to increase traffic month over month without the search traffic?

Yes, to some extent. My title is "A Singular Creaion: Art Gallery, Art Contests and Art Forums".

Not all of the sites that are coming up on the top of the searches include an anchor text or title attribte on their links. Yet they are getting good results. I don't understand why other than the fact that some are paying for ad placement.

Yes. My site is growing very well through referrals. I have over 4000 subscribers to my email newsletter and my forums are growing well also. I get between 9000 and 12000 unique visits per month. I just can't get good search results for some reason. Maybe because my site is very broad. Not only do I have a gallery, I have contests, forums, etc.

Google focus a lot on page importance. To make your page important, you would need to attract more high quality inbound links to your site with the anchor text, 'art contests'.

Of course, good on-page optimization will help you to head start the SEO. Do consider:

    1. Take another look at the page's title where you want to optimize with the keyword, 'art contests'. Try to shorten the title to contain only the targeted words if possible.

    2. Include the targeted keywords in the headers tag, H1 etc.

    3. Bold your targeted keywords on the page.

For the target page can you use the title "Art Contests" only instead of making it longer? Otherwise you better place the phrase at the beginning of the title.

The tool I am using shows 9524 queries which shows the phrase is popular but with just about 7 million results it's not too competitive enough.

Add more content about art, about contests to establish your site as a niche site for art contests or arts or contests.

You should buy some links on high PR websites with the anchor keyword "art contests". Trust me. It helps.

Keep building unique content for you website and get good quality related links and you will eventually show up…..you can even try to syndicate few articles , that will help you to get some one way links……if you have some news worthy stuff related to ur website do a press release……
