Directory submission seem to be solely done to gain PR, and yield almost no traffic, correct? If so, it doesn't really matter what category you put it in, or what you put for your description, etc, right? I'm just new to directory submission, and would like to know. This would save me a bit of time if I knew it didn't matter how I submitted it, as long as my link is there.
I'd go for topical relevance over PR. I'd prefer a listing on an indexed and cached page with a related title and quality listings that would compliment your own. Yes, I think that the category does matter. Especially if it's linked to with keywords I'm targeting. Then again, it's my personal preference.
That's what I have been doing, but, from what I gather, most people seem to do it solely for PR. I guess it's possible to get some hits from directory submissions, so it wouldn't hurt to continue doing this.
You are better off putting your listing in a category that is relevant to yours, this will give you more benifit in terms of serps. Although it is always nice to have a link on high pr page I think it is better to be placed on a page that is relevant. In the long run relevant links will lead to good pr.
If you put your link on a quality directory you will definitely receive some traffic as well. Plus, as others has said, it is always better to have a link on the page that is relevant to your website.
If for no other reason you should submit to the write category to give your submission the best chance of being approved. Especially if submitting to free directories, obviously miscategorized submissions will often result in rejection. Besides that fact, you should be looking to get the most out of your submission. Having your link surrounded by other related links helps your site rank better.
Well with due respect .... thats why catagories are thier right? I mean if not then i would just submit to word cload sites and just skip web directories all together if you dont want to go threw the painful and tasteless act of finding the closest catagory and talking about your site in the descriptions you submit about your site ..... But i must warn ya that if you just submit anywhere in any of mine and dont add a decently smart educated description that is about your site then IT WILL BE Deleted thx malcolm
Oh ok. I guess there is more to site rank than I thought. Anyway, thanks for the responses. This is what I have been doing so far, and I guess I will continue this.
of course it matters! RELEVANCE is KEY for G and prob other SE as well. If you placed your link in a good relevant category with a nice category description to match, your backlink will be much stronger than placing it in a category without any of the above properties. So it matters.....
I have the same opinion. It's always better to be listed with related sites. As for the description, same thing --- you want words related to your site surrounding the link. Not to mention if visitors do come across the lisitng...they're a lot less likely to click if your description is poor.
SEO for a higher position in the SERP is more important than PR. So, it is better to consider the relevancy of the page where you get your backlink on. Even if your focus is more for PR, irrelevant page may NOT be benefitial as Google sometimes devalue a link placed on an irrelevant site/page, depending on how relevant or irrelevant the theme is.
Relevant category listing is SEO friendly too.. Search engines like links related to content on the same page. Also, directory owners may move your link in appropriate category even if you submit to a non-relevant high PR category.
One more question ... should we submit to Directory Category which have a PR 5 or Paid Directory which have a PR 4 ??? idk just wondering because i get stuck sometimes
well think of it this way smub.... Most directory owners have it were the 2nd level or the mains are for FEATURED listings as they are paying more for the review as well as the PR listed closest to the domain. Regular listings can be submitted anywhere relevant after that ... If not they are moved appropriately by the editor... thx malcolm
