Does it make sense to do some domain parking?

Discussion in 'Domain Names' started by joliett89, Jan 24, 2012.

I have some good domain names that are available and I am not planning to use them for anything (for the most part, maybe 1 out of 6). I was reading that it is not a very good idea, but other people say they made some substantial amounts of money.
I am not talking about some random names, but names that seem to be taken and worth quite a lot etc.
Would you just register and go to sedo.com (or maybe somewhere else, where?)

    Thank you.

Cant edit, but I meant: Names that look like that should have been taken.

How much money you can make from domain parking will depend on whether or not your domains are getting type-in traffic.

If these domains are available to register it's unlikely they're getting any traffic, because if they were, they would have been registered a long time ago.

If the domains receive some decent amount of traffic consistently, you can park them and make some cash from parking. However, if they don't receive any traffic, it might be better to develop and monetize them and this way you will also increase their value - as developed websites have higher value.

This isn't correct. In fact, unless you own something like candy.com, type in traffic nowadays is minimal. Which is why the big dogs moved over to minisites like wellparked.com for example.

It is correct. The big dogs are involved in tasting, which basically allows them to test out domains that are available to register to see if they have traffic. If they have no traffic they get a refund and it's onto the next one! Domainers moving onto mini sites has nothing to do with domains not getting type-in traffic.

I second that. There are still people that make substantial amount of money from domain parking.

But I doubt the thread starter will make money in the particular case cause the domains in question most probably do not get type-in traffic.

Of course you should park your names if not in use. Why not make some $$ from them if they are doing nothing? Unless they infringe on someone's TM...

It is not that I dont use them. I just know they are available. I want to buy them and then park it (without any previous traffic etc, just typed in). I am not expecting to make $1000 etc, just wondering whether I should be able to make that $10 extra, or at least break even etc...

Well, from all written above you should have understood that it depends primarily ont he names.
You can make a lot of money theoretically but most probably you won't and it's quite probable that you make just $0.

I agree with contentboss, if these names were good enough to make money as parked domain names then they would already be registered. I would guess you will not make back your registration fee.

If you really think these are good domain names, then why haven't you registered them?

Unless the registration fee is a lot of money to you, I would register your best name immediately. Until you register it, it's not your name. Once it's registered, you can park it and measure the traffic and the money, if any, that you make.

I heard that you want to be earning 80% of reg fee from parking for a domain to be worth having. But the only way you'll know if they can meet this requirement is by registering them and testing it out.

Like others have said, if you feel they're good names then take a punt. If it's just 2-3 then you could get them for $30 for a year and if you can make $25-$30 in a year while parking them they could be worth keeping. If not, drop them and move on. No big loss!

I would park mines if i wasn't using it. It's better since you are not using them anyways. Sell them if you want.

If you use your imagination and couple that with a strong theme for your brand, you are bound to come up with some viable options.

Turn them into websites and put some unique content with adsense - this will bring in more than simply parking them.

Try and come up with some unique ideas to use the domains, if not then park them, at the very least you will be able to make some money from them providing the are receiving good traffic.

Yeah, why not give it a try.

I once made good money from a misspelled site here. Was is nice income, i then sold the domain to the original site.

If your domains have the right names and get lots of automatic type in traffic, then you can make a good amount parking them. However, I don't think you are allowed to actively drive traffic to a parked site. If they don't earn that much when parked, why not just fix them up a little bit and sell them off? You might come out better that way.

If you have the domain names, it makes better sense to put them to use apposed to just having them laying around waiting to expire.
