It depends on the PageRank of the site/page, whether the links posted are set as FOLLOW or NOFOLLOW and the relevance of the anchor text relative to your site.

If you are going to venture into posting links on blogs, be sure you're contributing to the discussion and providing the link as a relevant source of further information - dropping an irrelevant link will have the comment flagged as spam and it will be deleted by the moderator.

Even if it's no follow, you will still get a slight bit of value from it if it uses relevant anchor text. Very small, but still.

It depends. I've had some success if I had something useful to say, for example "I agree/disagree because *explaination*" or "There is also this thing you didn't mention" etc.

If you're going to comment on a blog make sure it's a controversial post and is getting a lot of pageviews - to benefit from exposure... As for the seo link benefit, gsv13 is right most blogs have nofollow tags...

It will help - even if it is no-follow. Dofollow ones have a long term benefit though, unlike nofollow ones.

Comments on popular blogs may bring in some traffic from others (if you put in a catchy enough "name" to go with it, and is one of the first 10 comments). This traffic is of course temporary.

In most cases it goes far beyond just giving a random one line comment and then giving an URL.

I've seen those "I agree -- http://www.LINK.com" posts and have never once clicked through. I've gotten those comments in my blogs, and never once have I approved them out of the Queue.

Why? Because they added NOTHING to the blog/thread in question and it was obvious it was little more then spam.

If you want your link to be more effective then give some actual content. Consider the content a 'payment' for the hosting of your link. It'll only take a few moments to write something up, and then your link can stay there for years...

I go into more details here: Link Building with Blog Comments

And the most important thing to remember when trying to get a free blog comment link is to hold that blog/community above yours. The other webmaster will be flattered if you complement him/her, and if you give your comment some content, then you'll help that link get SERP (which in turn gives the blog better ratings). It's WIN/WIN!

I think it could get you a few traffic clicks - but most blogs have tne no follow attribute in outgoing links

Like many cool things on the web, spammers have pretty much ruined the ability to get backlinks from "famous" blogs.

Most have nofollow tag, but it does help with the traffic. Many people report that they daily post on John Chow's blog, and they get 20 visitors a day from it.

I've found that in the past that carefully worked blog comments can increase traffic to niche sites by up to 300%

as someone else has said its all in actually contributing something to the discussion and making people want to read more.

and it may be nofollow but its a link in the total count.
