I read that hypenating your file names helps with SE rank suchas

    abc.com/my-file-howto.html rather than myfilehowto.html

    What do you guys think?

I noticed when I started hyphenating my pictures and pages my rankings dropped. But everything I have read [and been proven] states otherwise, so Im stuck with a PR4 site instead of the old PR5 / 6 I had.

Personally I think it looks spammy to have too many hyphens.

However there are times (like when you are creating the filenames using mod rewrite and a database) when you have to use hyphens.

The answer really is that either is fine.

at first this worked for us, but at the present day I believe the effect it had has been cancelled and g seems to be able to distinguish seperate words in a constant filename now anyway.

Can use single hyphen in url. More than that looks spamy.

Hyphen is word saperator for SEs.

    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=webdesign&btnG=Google+Search
shows g is considering webdesign as one word

    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=web+design&btnG=Search
shows g is considering them two words

    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=web-design&btnG=Search
shows g is considering them two words AND word "design" following "web"

    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q="web+design"&btnG=Search
shows g is considering them as one word made up of two words

means....G takes hyphen as a word seperator, also it follow the sequence of words.

Hence, having hypen will help a bit (a small degree)

Also, use it in the same order..as you are targeting....not reverse. Reverse won't help.

See the difference in SERPs results (I mean the ranks of sites in list) also see the difference in number of pages for both web-design and web design querry.
