Does higher PR Necessarily mean higher rankings?

Hi all

Im looking to start my next project soon and my main competitor (number 1 on google) has been up since 2004 with a PR of 3, is it worth me trying to compete with him or will it take a loooooong time to even get close?

Will i need to have a high PR to overtake him?

PR is one of many factors affecting rankings - Having a high PR is a nice thing to have but don't concentrate on it too much.

PR3 isn't that difficult to beat anyway. Probably the main thing to worry about is your competitor's domain age. Since it's been up since 2004, don't expect to beat it pretty quickly - It will take a while. SEO is a long, waiting game though, so you're going to have to be patient no matter what you're trying to rank for. Just keep working at it.

 

ok thanks, so is it possible to say if i had a PR 1 site that over time it could overtake a PR 3? as in ranking position

 

As MervinKoops said, don't focus too much on PR. If you are doing SEO correctly and building your site and links,, the PR will come. I have several PR0 (new) sites that beat out PR3 sites on the first page solely due to the fact that they are SEO'd.

 

The age of the domain is one factor too. Since you cant beat him on that, you have to focus on link building. Dont worry too much about PR, with enough backlinks, and enough onpage seo, there is a strong possibilty of overtaking his position

Toolbar PR is quite distanced from the true PR that Google actually uses. Just like Google doesn't show you all the backlinks it can see, it doesn't show you the true PR either. At least that is what many SEOs believe, and I'm one of them.

I pay no attention to PR and its correlation with rankings and SE traffic is exceptionally weak, especially under PR6.

I've never really understood why people get stressed or excited about changes in the green pixels, when every other factor (rankings, traffic, etc. i.e the ones that actually matter) all stay the same.

 

I must say pageranking is overrated. Results is what really matters at the end of the day, whether reflected in sales, advertising income, etc. etc.

PR does not affect the rankings. Google has all but phased it out, but keeps it because its such an iconic thing for SEO and helps people see results for all their hard work.

You can have no pr and rank higher than someone with a pr6, if your content is more relevant and will benifit the google user to find your site over theirs.

 

High PR is good but it is not necessarily required in having a good search engine ranking. Focus to more important factors like content and back links,

 

many people balance the website by PR.

 

I suggest buy an aged domain or register a domain with your keyword on it. And do SEO on yur site, do social bookmarking, do link exchange(preferably pr3-5 blogs/site) IF you can't have it free, pay for it.

 

PageRank really is a thing of the past. At one time it was a good measure of a site's traffic, quality and potential. Now I think it's less and less relevant because there really isn't a strong reason for Google to focus on developing it. Remember Google wants to provide quality results to their searchers, that's priority #1. Focusing a lot of time and effort on putting a rank on every page on the internet doesn't do much for the searcher anymore.

 

so much misinformation here. if you were all using the word "toolbar" in front of pagerank, then these statements would be correct.

pagerank (the real pagerank that we cant see or measure) is VERY MUCH a part of rankings.

and it is a multiplier, ie if everything else is equal the site with the higher REAL pagerank will rank higher.

so to answer your original question.. Does higher PR Necessarily mean higher rankings?

-if everything else is equal, and we are talking about real Pagerank, then yes, it does. if you are talking about toolbar (which of course you are) then no it doesn't necessarily mean so, but in most cases it gives you a good idea how far ahead they are of you.

because we cant see it reliably via the toolbar anymore doesn't mean it isnt there, working as always. just like the electricity in your power sockets.
