Does having multiple domain names hurt or hinder in the SERPs?

I own six variables of the same domain - three .com and three .co.uk. All six contain keywords in different positions.

Would it hurt or hinder my SERPs to place the same site on all six domains, with a .301 redirect in place on five of the sites, pointing to the 'main' site?

    eg:

    x1.co.uk
    x1.com
    x2.co.uk
    x2.com
    x3.co.uk

    Redirected to: x3.com ...

I feel it will not do any good. More work without any benefit. Duplicate content is of no help... might even hurt.

If you 301 redirect, G might not take in account the keywords from the other sites

Thanks for the replies. I had assumed the .co.uk domains would perform better in the local (UK) SERPs ...

Presuming that your .co.uk domains are on dns servers in the UK then yes it will help with your local serps.

Then you can target the main google when you are ready, grab the local traffic, and then ramp it up for world wide coverage.

That said, how would I go about setting up a redirect on each of the .co.uk domains to the main site - the .com. By placing a .htaccess file on each domain?

You should be able to do it through the control panel wherever your domains are registered. If not, a simple meta refresh would work fine.

    <meta http-equiv='refresh' content='1;url=http://www.site to be redirected to.com'>

i dont think that it is gonna do much for you. Might help save some traffic of people who mispelled the URL. Thats about it.

if your websites are not yet live and you make a 301 redirect to .co.uk to .com then there will be no existence for .co.uk as 301 redirect state that you have permanently moved your .co.uk sites to .com. If they were live then almost all the good and bad values associated with them will pass on to the .com domain...

Don't use <meta http-equiv='refresh' content='1;url=http://www.site to be redirected to.com'>, instead use .htaccess file (for Apache server) to make a 301 redirect.
