For search engines it doesn't mean anything (considering most blogs are NoFollow).

Yes but you are missing the point. Google has realised that pretty much all blog comments are spam so even if they are dofollow they will not contribute as much as other link building techniques would...

If this is true, so Google just opened a wide door for all those websites/webmasters they love selling backlinks to you for big bucks.
One of these days it will come to the point that buying backlinks will be the only source of getting backlinks at all.
I do see Googles point of trying to fight all the spam on blog comments but would have hoped for them to find another way but to ignore backlinks from blog comments.
Same as you I have seen a big drop in Google Traffic for our store since a lot of the backlinks were from blog commenting, even a lot of those blogs were theme related to our shop.
I am almost about to say "Google F*** u" and to optimize more for other search engines and instead of using Google Adwords I might look into other options.
Not feeding the king who rules the web much longer.

Searching for "x" terms I get Google displaying backlinks I posted in the past and my stats reveal traffic coming from those links.

I feel exactly the same! However, unfortunately all the other search engines have such low traffic going to them. On Yahoo and Bing I am still ranked for my main keywords and some that are even more competitive that I haven't even optimised for!

Google is pissing me off....! There are now sites which are ranking higher than me but really have poor quality backlinks. Just a few sitewide links which adds up...

Yes, they still count if it is dofollow but its weight is not the same as before because of the update of google when it comes to search engine.

    kind regards

They still follow it but of course their value well below a link to, but it could be a good way to bring Traffic.

Since Google Webmaster report still show those links, I think they are still important.
However, I think onpage seo is getting more important than offpage seo.
