I heard somewhere long ago that a new site won't get picked up by G until it's been accepted into the ODP. I rather doubt this but would like to know for sure.
Thanks. I'm putting up a new site this weekend and just remembered DMOZ for the first time in over a year--which sums up how much others remember it too.
What is this "added advantage" you speak of? By the way all of my sites get into the ODP within a month of submission.
The added advantage is probably just the good inbound link. DMOZ is scattered over thousands of sites mirroring it, though I've heard that all those links don't really help you because they are duplicate. I still have to wonder if perhaps the bots might still follow those links and crawl your pages more often. I just can't imagine it'd really help in link popularity (to boost your ranking). The only direct connection between dmoz and google is that google mirrors DMOZ. You won't get into the google directory without an approved DMOZ entry. It's not essential to success with google, though.
A more accurate statement would be that anyone can get into Google Web Search, but there is but one way to get into the Google Directory and that is to be listed in DMOZ/ODP as they received RDF to populate their (Google) directory - could have simply been an issue of not properly explained or even asked. DesignAgent is 100% correct - there is a relationship: between the two directories.
DMOZ time is over. Link at least one PR4 or better site, put some content (the more the better), update daily if possible, validate your pages, use good SEO practices, submit to Google, MSN, Yahoo, Teoma, Altavista etc. and forget for a couple of months, and last but not least use sitemaps and be patient.
Correct. There is some confusion about Dmoz and Google... Google search has nothing to do with Dmoz however the Google Directory does use Dmoz.
i wish google would stop relying on dmoz, they clearly have the resources to run their own directory, why rely on one that is arguably corrupt to a certain degree.
