Does google recognize this as a H1 tag ?

my guess would be yes, but to be honest there's really no way to be sure what does and doesn't trip up bots. and when in question, it may be better to default to something safer. any reason you can't use a css file?

This page is extremely helpful to me when creating external css files:
    http://www.w3schools.com/css/css_examples.asp

Anything you do to cut down on file size, css especially, can help rankings. The robots get to the content faster.

Google recognize that as a H1 , but this will decrease your rank instead to increase. It is like fraud.
