Does Google penalize you for posting other peoples' articles if you credit and link?

Like if I post an article from another blog on my site, in part or in whole, with a link back to the original article, will Google ding me for dupe content and bury me in search results?

That's not true though, I have actually had duplicate articles on the first page for long-tail keywords. I rarely copy entire articles though. I have a lot of original content but it is almost impossible to have 100% original content on a news site especially if you want it to be truly up to date.

No they will not penalize you for having duplicate content from another site, they only penalize duplicate content on the same website.

Are you sure about this? Then there would be no reason for all of those dumb autoblog programs that create nonsensical posts in an attempt to avoid dupe content penalties.

When you are saying penalize what do you mean, your page with duplicate content can still get indexed, and still can rank.

I just copied and pasted a paragraph from an article i found into google and I found a vast amount of sites with the same content all of them indexed in google

copy and paste any paragraph you see about a popular topic and you will see how many pages have the same content

I'm talking about penalizing you in terms of page rank and SERP for competitive keywords

It is always advisable not to copy the exact content, make some modifications to make it unique.

Google doesn't penalize you if you write something about another article or blog post, then link that post and credit the author or the website. All the better if another website runs your article, credits you as author then links back to your website.

After changes google made in last couple of months (panda update and fixing of it) I would avoid that practice...

You can quote some parts of article but copying complete article on your blog can be very risky now!

Google began to kill content farms and you can be one of them! :)

In general, Google hates copied content irrespective of its importance. Moreover, it is not advisable to float adsense in the copied content site as there is every possiblity of getting banned by Adsense.
