yeah, try about.com as an example. they have great serps, but they use popups (and it's an MFA site too)

From what I have seen and read google takes things into account like how fast people return back to the search engine .... so basically you can be annoying aslong as people dont quickly hit back... kind of =P

Come on Shoe... that takes us into G bowling territory.. if that was true..well..think about it

What U doin round here at this hour? Jeez.. even Matt takes vacations (tho methinks the wife has plans.. been liking his sisters little one too much lately.. there are more than cats in the future.. he he)

but really M8.. you'd be into cookies and tool bar data... unreliable and too easily manipulated to be a valuable metric

    No?

I'm not sure, but from what I know, Google don't really like popups & popunders. They may still rank high some websites using them, but I don't think it helps to achieve high rankings.

I don't think you are going to get penalized for popup. just go on.

I second to that. They do want to have the best search engine, what good is site A in top 5 for keyphrase X if all the visitors just hit the back button ? It's just a good indicator for Google that the site does not belong there.

Here's the word from Google (from their Google Adwords guidelines):

https://adwords.google.com/select/guidelines.html#L4 (Adwords log in required, I think)

They will stop ad campaigns if pop ups are found on the landing page. I assume they at least negatively weight popups for SERPs since they ban them for Adwords.

Let is be crystal clear that Google does NOT penalize websites that are using popus. Just search for some underground stuff and you will find the number 1 result has popups, I guarantee ;)
