I really doubt it. Unless of course, the directory itself is blacklisted for excessive linking without giving much value to it's users.

It doesnt really matter where you get links from as long as you have Good Content.

At one stage one of my sites had a lots of links from porn sites and I had no idea how it got there. Then Google removed my site for 3 days and then it came back without those links. No idea how that happened

I dont think that google penalize sites for getting paid links. What i feel is the link should be quality and relevent to your site.

Ultimate aim is user should not get cheated and user shouldnt feel bad at the same time we should also get lot of traffic right.

The best answer to all our clues about how google works is the Google patent.
Which................ doesnt seem to appear in the results in Google anymore. I wish I bookmarked URL. :(

Google does not penalize site for processes that can be implemented by a third party such as a competitor. Anything your competitor could do “off-page” wont get penalized.

To answer the thread posters question: NO buying links doesn’t hurt you.

What 30K is saying is that those links can be of little or no value, and can damage the link sellers site.

I own a bid link directory and have gained a PR2! A bid link directory! Have a look at some of the sites that have paid links and they are PR 4 and above! I don't think Google cares just make the category relevant http://www.yawoop.com
