They won't penalize you but keep this in mind: If you get linked from a directory with a PR6 that has 800 some odd outgoing links you won't be getting nearly as much credit as you would from a PR6 site with say 5 outgoing links. Google is going to distribute the link cred between all outgoing links on said site among various other factors.
