Hey, So recently, my site plummeted in the ranks and I was trying to identify the reason that this happened. I read somewhere that google does not want a page with over 100 links on it. On my site, I have a page in which there are over 100 links, but they are all directed to my site. More specifically, the page is devoted to R&B artists and each link is devoted to a subpage for that artist. Will google punish me for this or do they only care if the links are outgoing? Thanks!
There's noothing wrong with 100 links on a page if they are useful to your visitor. Google indexes pages with 1000 links (although it is a high PR site)
I'm not sure if Google has any trouble spidering more than 100 links on a page (I believe anything over 100 just takes a while longer to spider), but it's a pretty safe bet that you wouldn't be penalized for it.
Maybe thats a result of Google Dance, which I believe normal, soon your site will be back in the top Google SERP.
Hi! If you duplicate around your website these 100 links, maybe these pages can become as supplental result. (I am telling you for experience). Best Jakomo
Wow that is a whole lot of links, not running a link farm are you? BTW, it's nice to have another thread that has NOTHING to do with Page Rank!
I read somewhere that google recommend that we keep links less than 100 on a single page. It just a recommendation not a must.
On Googles webmaster guidelines they say to "Keep the links on a given page to a reasonable number (fewer than 100)." http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=35769 My question in regards to this is: does this apply to sitemaps as well? If I have more than 100 links on my html sitemap am I going to have problems/penalties/etc?
That's what I am worried about it looking like. The page, seen here http://www.rnbhaven.com/artists.php (sorry, it says I can't create a live link yet), is a list of all of the artists on my site with a link to their biography. Initially, I had it as a select box where you would pick the artist and go to the page, but I was afraid that would prevent google from being able to spider those pages. As such, I changed the layout to be more like one I'd seen on another site featuring music in which the artists were listed out. However, I made this change roughly a week before my rankings plummeted, leading me to suspect this might have been the cause. I'll look up Matt's blog to see what he says. Thanks again for the further comments.
