Does google penalize domain names that are too long?

Discussion in 'Google' started by atforums.digitalpoint, Mar 31, 2011.

For example I am considering a domain name that is eight syllables long. I know there are tons of other factors more important than domain name length, but I'm only concerned about this factor right now.

Does anyone have any experience or knowledge on this question?

Big domain names don't have any issue with Google. But generally people use small domain names as they are easily remembered by visitors. So, try to use keyword rich small domain names.

Well, if the domain name you are taking is a keyword niche domain then its better so that it will rank better than domains with no meaning. However if the domain you are taking is not a keyword of your business then a short memorable name is better.

What the hell are you talking about? He asked about Google, not AdSense...
And no, the length wont get you a penalty at all. But it might get hard to remember the longer it is.

Yeah exactly. Try and select a long tail keyword that includes your niche but is also memorable. If you can, try to get 100% keyword density for your exact keyword phrase.

I don't think that long domain names have any problem when it comes to google. But the shorter it is the better it would be remember for your visitors.

There is no sort of penalty, but the general opinion in SEO is that more than 3 hyphens looks 'spammy' and that G *may* consider that a low-quality signal.

Visitors definitely see more than 3 hyphens as getting spammy. So long is fine, 3 or fewer hyphens is best, IMO.

The domain name length have nothing to do with domain penalizing, I saw too many long domains ranking high up in the results.

There is no any strict rules for penalizing a long domain.
Its better to have a small domain.

As everybody said, there is no harm from Google with long domain name..
    The point to consider is
1- It should be memorable by poeple.
    2- Contain keyword
3- Less or no hyphens (-).
4- Using Company name, then try to use only 1st character of it. ( Disgitalpointinfotech.com = dpinfotech.com)

Very true, there is no penalty issue with long domain name.
But when you choose a long domain, it becomes difficult for the visitor to remember it...
Obviously the ideal case is to choose a short but descriptive domain name (or break the domain name with hyphens, it helps you in targeting more keywords in URL)

An another issue with long domains is that... You may face some problems while promoting long domain names on Adwords, Other PPC Engines or sometimes submitting to directories

I'd be inclined to agree with C.Rebecca on this one - it's less an issue of syllables and more one of weighing up the "user-friendliness" of the address. Google isn't going to evaluate your site based on the number of syllables in the address (not to mention that 8 syllables can be long, or very long, depending on the word(s)). For example:

ihavealongwebsiteaddress.com = 8 syllables and ain't going to help anyone remember it (whereas i-have-a-long-website-address.com is easier to decipher and therefore retain)
hippopotamusrefuges.org = as many syllables, but a lot simpler to figure out at a quick glance (and to remember, though a single hyphen to separate would work a lot better)

A long URL will Create problem. Google will index URLs up to 2047 characters in length, but the SERP links to these URLs will cause Google’s servers to throw an error if anyone clicks on them. So the longest URL that Google will crawl and index–and that will actually work when someone clicks on it in the SERPs–is approximately 1855 characters in length.
