    And once it recognizes it as duplicated content it'll remove it just as quickly too.

    As Dan said, DC gets first indexed, then often removed again after a short time. DC won't hurt your overall rankings for the whole site as long as you don't have loads of it, just the pages with DC will not rank well.

    DC itself does NOT mean you get penalized, just the pages with DC will rank bad. Only if you push it too far an have alot of DC you may get penalized.

    Actually the DC'd pages won't get ranked at all because they'd be removed from the index entirely. And there's always the chance that the legitimate page (the one with the original contnet) may be mistaken for a DC page.

    That alone should be reason enough to avoid it.
