Some webmasters told me Google does not indicate duplicate content. but they were wrong I found sites having the same content that were indexed one after the other.

yea, what's up with this. I'm trying to figure out what to do because I have a .com as well as a co.uk and .co.in etc. I want people in those other countries to be able to go to the site and see their native TLD's but I'm worried about google penalizing. Anyone who can glarify what's going on here, please do

Majority of the time Google does not index duplicate content, due to different web site designs and layouts a crawler might not be able to tell 2 web pages are really the same just altered. You can report these sites in Google Webmasters Central with the report spam link.

It isn't a question of indexing, but of ranking. Google, will, in all probability, put the site which it trusts the most first.

Google will crawl your pages, determine if they are duplicate, then decide whether to keep the page in its index or not. If the page is "indexed" then it may hold something of value that the original source does not have, but more than likely it will be placed in a "supplemental" index, and not served up very often.

Yup, Google indexed also duplicate content but I don't think it will help your site to rank with the same content.IMO

I am agree with you. Actually Google will crawl this page but if it is duplicate content then it is not certain that it would be indexed.

    Hi,

Most of the replies above are not accurate. The best answer is, yes, Google does index duplicate content however they will penalize you in some 'ways' later. :)

I think you are best among the above, like me.

yes google never shows any error while crawling and indexing your page, but it always counts your error points upto a limit and when you cross that limit, you get penalized.

Some other sites uses duplicate content but they were trying to build quality links. So, I guess link building sometimes killed the duplicate content issues. I have already seen some sites that uses duplicate content but ranks well because of good links.

oh my god you people kill me!
this is to educate all of you and by the way if are not sure of the answer don't post reply....it just speads bad information.
    yes google indexs duplicate content.
then they place it in the supplemental index......which is served up but only when less than 1000 results are present.
sites can have duplicate content if they are news sites (and still get ranked)
sites can have duplicate content if they are have high traffic (and still get ranked)
the way to get your pages out of the supplimental index is not to delete the page but to change the text to less than 20% duplicate content (check copyscape or dupcheck)
or here is the million dollar secret.............
get a link from a high traffic site to page with duplicate content that will pull it out!

There are many misconceptions about duplicate content. If you site is completely copied from another with no original content. One or both of the sites may end up later being penalized and possibly deindexed. It happens but not all of the time. It is more common when you have duplicate pages on the same server.

If you site includes some duplicate content, chances are slim that you will have any problems with Google. For example article and regular directories have duplicate content all the time.

It is best to use original content because you get more repeat visitors and your site will be respected more. However, the occasional duplicate article (with permission) will do nothing to lower either your ranking or effect rather you are included in the index.

Most sites that are removed from the index are sites deemed as made for adsense or extremely spammy sites. These includes site that have little or no content and a bunch of ads or sites that are copies of 1000s of other sites that are distributed for sell as MFA sites.

One more thing to clarify. This has nothing at all to do with supplemental results. Here is a quote from Matt Cutts' blog eplaining supplemental results:

If you have problems with your duplicated content pages, why not to rewrite instead of copy-paste? Just check this content rewrite tool.

Google indexes duplicate content, but it usually displays only one copy in search results.

Well, Google, does not want the same results with the same content coming up for its searcher.

    Not true.

    Here is the proof.

    search in google for this

    "Back Pain Brings Bad News"

this is the first article that I wrote and submitted to different directories.

the first 10 or more results for the above title, u will see same article that I wrote, in different sites
