As per my experience there is not any special effect of " | " in SERP. it will used for separator in title tag like " buy dog for your security | domainname " here you can separate description with domain name. and it will look good when your site listed by search engine.

using "|" helps rank better as we can use many keywords separated by pipe. one positive point is it looks good comparatively when we use keywords without pipe.

 

I personally prefer the hyphen, or I set up my title tags using colons or semi-colons as appropriate.

Example2: DogWebsite.com - A friendly guide to dog breeding, health and care
Example3: DogWebsite.com: Dog Health - Fleas and how to get rid of them

The pipe "looks" nicer, I agree, but so many end users are unaccustomed to using this character or knowing what it means I think it is best left unused, or used sparingly. You have to think of that end user seeing your title tag in the search results and determine what is readable - the pipe acts like a roadblock to reading further. Just go back and re-read the title of this post, you read it like a robot, with long pauses.

Example4: DogWebsite.com | Dog Health | Fleas and how to get rid of them - it doesn't read as nicely at all.

As far as seo'ing, since I rid my title tags of them a couple of years ago, I can't fully say what is better in the present tense, but I did think my pages were more fully indexed on each of my sites after I got rid of pipes.

For SEO it does not make any difference.
However, I personally believe that it is a question of one's liking.
You are going to use something unconventional if you use the vertical bars and you know there may be both positive or negative effect of this type of action.

 

Doesnt really matter for SEO its all for visitors purposes

 

Why dont you use commas instead of |? commas looks better than|
