Does Google know TOO much about you?

Hi all, I have been asking this in a number of places, wondering if people out there really worry or care about the amount of data Google has on us.
Recently, a consumer watchdog group has reported that they want extensive legislation allowing people to be able to opt out of Google's tracking of their browsing habits. It quotes among other things:

"The Justice Department should be worried when Google tries to obfuscate its data tracking capacity and reach rather than disclose all of it," said Judy Dugan, research director of Consumer Watchdog. "Congress should demand that Google stop tracking Americans' online behavior without their prior permission."
The full article is here: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/0..._n_228232.html

Does this bother you? Do you care either way? I would love to hear comments.

I think it does. It's actually frightening how much they know about you which is why I am often cautious when using their services.

Google have very strong algorithm to find out each and every link. They can access all your online data but you can monitor some data to be not indexed in google and other search engine with efficient uses of robots tags and robot.txt.
some you would like to indexed some pages but not egar to link that to other pages in this case you can say robots to index but no follow.
If you would like to index and transfer value of the link to other page. say index and follow.
no index and no follow can be use not to index in search engine and not to transfer the value of the link.

IP Address doesn't matter much as most of the users use shared IP.

They don't know if you don't use their services, don't provide too much information, or turn on the web history. One time, I turned on the web history, suppriese. All my search, my visit web sites are recorded. So, I cleaned up my web history before I deactivate the Web History service.

Well, I don't think it's a matter if Google is or isn't collecting data on individuals, I think we're in agreement that they already are. What is however more interesting is if we if we should be allowed (via legislation) to be able to choose if they collect our data or not...

I guess I have really never thought to much about Google knowing to much about me...Unfortunately I really need Google, so I guess I really don't care that much as long as I get what I want...I would be interested to know exactly what they know about me though. How extensive do they get? interesting stuff..

The usefulness of Google’s services relies heavily on tracking your past and present online behaviour... In doing this they are aiming to manipulate their search results to give you what they think you need / want! It's all about personalisation in this day and age. Also, if they wish to remain the number one search engine worldwide, it would be very unwise of them to mis-use this data... Can you imagine how much the (offline) media would blow one instance of Google mis-using someone’s personal data up in the air; probably causing a public boycott on the search giant? Their success is based on providing quality, useful results and gaining trust from users that this is what they are capable of... I can't see them wanting to jeopardise this trust.

    So stop being paranoid... :-P

The details they contain of us (webmasters) is huge. Our income from google, our bank details, how many websites and what websites we own. what we do in our spare time on the internet. etc the list goes on.
