Does Google count subdomains as part of the site?

Does Google count subdomains as part of the site or as another website?
I am asking that because I always read in the seo section that one should update the site regularly and I have a blog on a subdomain, which I update more often then the site itself.
Does this count as updating the whole website? Or do I need to update the main website more often?

Thank you for your advice... (Hope you could understand what I mean  )

I'm pretty sure it counts it as a separate site.

clinton is right google counts subdomains as a separate site, if you are updating your blog
on a regular basis that should be enough to keep your visitors and google happy.
