    I have had it happen to me. Someone, I assume purchased, maybe 100 links from very low quality blogs that obviously were paid for posts.

    My site has suffered since. I used to be top 5, consistantly. Now I am 8-15.

    No more now, ranking system is now more advanced. They will see the trends and filter out.

    Hmm I've seen possible eveidence of this for one of my clients recently. Not neccesarily one site but a lot of irrelevant spammy footer backlinks (which for some reason they built themselves!) seems to have affected them...
