In my experiences it has always helped me. Some say it doesn't, I can't see how it doesn't.

Backlinks and content is very much important, but if you have good keyworded domain, then it makes your task more easier.

personally, I don't think it matters. It might help explain what your site is about. I see a lot of results show up on wikipedia and squidoo and the domain name has nothing to do with those search results.

Domain name is one of the important criteria but not the only one!

You would need to undertake, lot more effort in putting up good content and building good network with other sites in your niche...

I am actually seeing full domains as page names! Seems to work. For instance, there is a website website.net and they have the page named website.com they are on the first page as well...

Lot of confused people here so I'll help you out:

The domain name is only relevant for the initial ranking in google, ie before your content and linking strategy can work. Once some time has passed they become the most important piece of the seo jigsaw.

it's very important, i've seen sites that were crap in their niche, but had a good url and were ranked quite good just because of that.

It does matter, it can grab more visitors -or inversely. Selecting the right keywords, or a creative/abstract short name is the ideal thing to do when creating a domain name.

Domain is very important and seems to be weighing even heavier as of late. Google seems to really be looking at the branding of domains etc and figuring that in all by domain name and authority links in your niche pointing to that domain. For instance you could have a PR3 website and could rank 1st for the term house building while someone could be targeting that and have PR6 but not have a domain name that is relevant.
