The domain name does play a role, but what you create on it holds more importance.

You could have an excellent domain with useless content on it.

It depends on the marketting and type of site. Domain name def has a role, but the size of the role varies.

No matter what the domain is, if the site itself (the content) is worthless, then the domain doesn't mean anything anymore.
But, if you plan to have great content, then the site can be that much better with a good domain name.

If you are targeting keywords, then find a domain with those keywords, that will help A LOT.
If your site will be a general topic type of site with no specific keyword, then get a memorable/brandable domain name.

In my experience a keyword driven domain will get you very fast to the top.
I have sites that ranked #4 only for being fully optimized for kw.
Make sure that the domain name is the KW only with no prefix or suffix, if it is more than just the kw, it will not rank so fast.
It is a give and take situation, if you want a thin affiliate site i will go for a kw loaded domain, u don't need .com, .net and .org will do it also and sometimes .info worked for me.
For an authority site that you want to grow in time, I will go for .com and nothing else (you want people to remember your domain name), try to go for a kw loaded name.com if not, go for something catchy.
Like for example if you want a blackberry info site
thin affiiliate site: blackberryphones.com or blackberryphones.net or blackberryphones.org
authority site: blackbgeeks.com or bbfanz.com or similar

    hope I helped

Yes, contents are king as mentioned above. Even if you got a nice catchy domain name without attractive contents, it will be of no use.

Yes domain name is very very important coz it is the main thing which determines how many search engine traffic you get. But it is not the only thing. So even a not so good domain name like naukri.com could be a huge success out of content and features

As you can see everybody made valuable points on your post,
i would say domain name and site content both play a vital role to make your site noticed in the Internet Market, as domain name will get you good searches if its the name matching the site content so that if anybody searches over the internet, he/she finally ends up coming on to your site.
and of course your site content has to be good to attract good and healthy users as this will make your site a standout product,

not to forget a good domain name with classy site content is all what you need to make a sites worth.

The domain name is very important to a Website's success in my opinion. It helps with marketing and site validity. However, it isn't as important as having great content. Unique content is always king. Just my 2 cents.

    Nope.
You have to advertise it. Traffic just doesn't come with no effort.

Not necessarily, but it can be an advantage if you have a quality, brandable domain name.
