My domain name is not an exact match for my target keywords. My competitor bought a domain name that is an exact match for a keyword phrase (with a hyphen). Both sites are approximately the same age. Having assessed their backlinks, I reckon that I have stronger backlinks for a particular phrase yet they still outrank me by two places in the SERPs for this particular keyphrase. We have, however, swapped places a couple of times in the SERPs.

There may be a number of factors why they rank above me, but I think that their exact match for a particular keyphrase gives them a boost that requires me to put in extra effort with my backlinks for that phrase. The extra effort is fairly significant because from what I can see, they aren't really serious about continually building new links. Interestingly, they are three places behind me in the caffeine results, which seem to favour the sites in my niche that have developed strong backlinks and gives less weight to sites with exact domain name matches.

Yes Domain effect SEO, for instance if you want to promote an "xyz" keyword on a "xy" domain then its is quite easy. on the other hand promoting an "xyz" keyword on"abc" domain is a difficult task indeed :)

A well-defined domain name can provide tremendous advantages for an online business, including the added benefit of boosting performance in the search engines.

Simple, easily-recognized domains convey professionalism and trust to search engine users.

If you're trying to rank for Blue Widgets.... i bet BlueWidgets.com would come to the top as long as you had the proper title tags etc. ....

And then of course some backlinks

"-" is treated as a word separator whereas "_" is treated as part of a word/string.

Apparently, now it looks like search engine is both looking on the content, title and domain name, that why I think this can be really a big factor.

    he wrote wedding_hotel ;)

weddinghotel and wedding_hotel won't be highlighted if the page is new. so its better to decide for wedding-hotel

domain_name.com ist not possible, so no need to discuss ;)

A keyword rich domain name is for sure better, but in the end it really depends on how much you promoted it.

If your URL contains keywords, your page will rise in SERP. That's one of the reasons to use human-readable URLs.
