I've not been adding new sites to directories since 2011 Does it work now? For low rate keywords, for example. Trust directories (PR 4+) ? non-trust, and spam directores (pr0....)?
Your stuck on old tactics my friend, have you heard of the term "link scheme", it is a term used by google for link spamming. Directory submission is only good for short term purposes, I suggest that instead of investing your time and energy on it, read blogs like Moz and SearchEngineLand to keep yourself up-to-date with SEO news.
That's a good advice! Excessive spammy links could also result in google action (both through algorithm and sometimes even manual).
I don't want having thousands spam links. May be 50-100 manual posting in high-pr dir it's good for new site?
Nope, not advisable. I wonder what your site is about? It seems that you are really eager to pursue directory submission. Anyway, it still up to you. I hope you have alternative strategies you have in mind aside from submitting to directories.
Thanks for answers. No, i've not alternative strategies, because starting from 0 =) I'm not ready invest a lot of money to links I work in ru-segment. But i've got a few affiliate sites about calling cards. Profit declined, and i looking for a new good CPA-affiliate =)
Good web directories work quite well, not only as back-links, but as a source for targeted traffic. What doesn't work is submitting to the many junk directories that are out there.
Directories still work. You just have to be more selective than before. And diversify your backlinks, from directories to guest posts and others.
From what I've read, Directory Listings actually harm your performance in search results now? From my understanding it's seen as bad practice, unless you're doing it in really niche market places.
1. Don't believe everything you read or hear, online or offline. There's a lot of misinformation and there is no evidence to prove that directories do not work. 2. Directories are websites just like any other. I do not think Google will not blindly penalize directories just because they are directories. Some are good and some are not. 3. I think directory listings can harm you if all or most of your links are coming from low-quality directories. Thus the reason to diversify your backlink profile.
If you Google it, you will find that people have been declaring that directories were dead since at least 2000, and it's not true now, just as it wasn't true then. As @steveb points out, web directories are websites, and links from websites will help your site's positioning when the websites are good, and could possibly hurt you if a large percentage of them are from bad ones. Otherwise, if you stick to the good ones, or at least the ones that aren't so bad, you'll do fine, and you are likely to receive targeted traffic from the good ones, which should be your chief aim.
Interesting, so judge it based on the quality of the directory instead of the fact that it is a directory. I was always confused because you see a lot of big companies on web directories.
Exactly, the search engines will index a web directory as a website, so you apply the same criteria, the chief difference being that it's a little easier to get your link in a web directory. Like any other site too, the harder it is to get in, the better the link will be, in all probability, so you want to look at web directories that have standards and abide by them. Many don't.
It still works but does not drive high traffic to your website. You can go for social media sites instead.
It really depends on what you mean by "Does it work now?" Does it help to rank? NO. Watch this video at 50:30 mark Can you make money? I guess Yes. I think there are still people that add their sites to general directories.
Website directories do work, infact some of them are great places to advertise your website, I look at it like this: If the website directory has things other than just links, say updating blog content, content through out the directory categories maybe a community and if I can build a great website profile "not just a link" including a decent description, links to inner pages and to social pages then that directory is a good directory and you should list there. Stay away from directories where you get to the home page and all you see is categories and nothing else. Hope this helps.
