    Hi,
I wonder if in 2009, we should submit our site to directories as old days! I think it's outdated technique. How do you think about this?
    Regards.

I blew 300 on a Yahoo Dir 4 weeks ago. It's got me 2 or 3 hits, but made no difference to G SERPS. Yahoo SERPS - I am now no1 for my site name. -- No way worth it so far!

Directories still give good anchored backlinks so I continue to use them.

Most links won't pass value immediately. First it takes time for Google to find the link, then Google must analyze the page and apply appropriate credit to the destination sites. Beyond this, Google will limit the value of the link for a period of time. 4 weeks is too short of a time period to determine how well that Yahoo link will eventually help you. But most will agree it is a costly placement in that directory and is probably not worth the money spent unless you have a large budget. If the traffic you receive stays the same, each visitor will cost you over $8...

When you submit it to quality link directories then you add some value to your website.

Relevant related directories do work, blasting your site over thousands of unrelated directories might help rank low trafficked / easy to rank keywords, but they won't help you much if you are in a competitive niche.

i agree. it's the anchor text that helps. in my opinion, quality directories are a good investment in time.
i use the backlink strategy along with the others on and off page to increase traffic and search engine results. working so far for me.

Quality is always the key. But with invention of search engines; directories are rarely used to search sites and now they are used for link building purpose only.

Directory submissions is a great way to get one way anchored backlinks with almost no cost if you opt for free directories. The main key is that you can use keywords as your titles.

I heard lot of people saying dir. links are not useful and it is talk of pasts. But, in my opinion it is the easiest and cheapest way of building backlinks. I had done enormous submissions for me as well as my clients and they had achieved great SERP results just with directory submissions.

Granted that dirs. cant provide you great page rank. With only directory submission you can expect max of PR3 or PR4. And as i said in my earlier posts it should not be the only link building strategy but it should be a part of your link building strategy.

Directory links can give you SERP value as well as PR value.

Yes, it still helps in increasing your keyword rankings in serp as well as on your backlinks as long as your site is submitted to several quality directories..

Everyone says RELEVANT and they mean "Site's KW should match one or two words"

For example........my web site KW are "Weddings" and "Music" and "DJs"

When I find a good Do Follow directory with FREE listings (no reciprocal exchange requirement) --- I will first try to find WHICH relevant category is linked to HOME PAGE directly.

Sometimes, its "Arts => Music" that has the best link juice

Other times, its "Shopping => Weddings" that is closer to the main Home index page.

You want to pick the page that has the CLOSEST PROXIMITY to the index page, with the fewest number of clicks to get there!

I also make sure that the Directory sorts its results by Page Rank.

When the Directory lists the highest PR sites first, they get better PR from Google.

I think its pretty much dead as a main strategy, but I would still think that although the link quality is very low, its not going to do any harm to have a LOT of directories giving you a little link love

The secret is finding good quality directories that are related to your niche. Links from them are very valuable. There are also some high quality general directories that pass link juice.
