At U of T you have to take an english course to enter a computer science major...I guess he helps for clarity of thought or whatever. Not only does getting a degree mean you've taken it classes, it means (in general) that you're punctual, organized, and get things done. Also it enforces things like collaboration and people skills. Of course we do have genius nerds. And I realize that DP and some other big sites were founded by people who did not get degrees, but they're the exception not the rule. Google's co-founders met in university, same with Yahoo and a lot of other big sites.
I am working for my degree only for self improvment and self respect! I am also hunting a social status, and social respect! i want to be somebody that's all...
A college degree still matters but I think it's more like: "It's not what you know but who you know". Today's job market is almost saturated. Even a master's degree nowadays is not a guarantee. See if a MBA degree still matters nowadays? Cast your vote here.
Where is the "job market is almost saturated"? I contacted an old collegue about joining me at a new job and he said he was interviewing with three companies that day and the day before and he was restricting his job search to only the foothill area of south east Orange County California. I had similar experience when I checked out the job market a few months back. Some of your articles on MBA's were at least 15 years out of date, most MBA programs were including soft side stuff, an overseas portion, and technology in the early 90's.
It definitely matters. You can find short cut ways to earn big bucks in a short period but a formal education is necessary to make you a disciplined, refined and urbane personality. To shape your personality (apart from mastering the subject), a degree is a MUST
i have two degrees (accounting and finance). i have a decent job, but not a great one. one thing i learned after the fact (and it's always after the fact) is a degree only works if you know how to properly apply it. i worked while i was in college and i wasn't active in school and didn't make a lot of friends or join a lot of clubs (to network), that was one of my biggest mistakes. -dan
