As soon as I get my master's Im guaranteed a promotion. But still, it doesn't mean much if you don't have experience to also back it up.
experience is worth ten times what a degree is worth, in software developement very few companies will take you on with just a degree
Bfft your argument is more flawed than you article on SEO http://www.frogengine.com/blog/?p=126#comments
This one was pure genius. Reread my response . A lot of people are successful these days without a degree. The ones who say you can't do anything without a degree are normally people over 50.
I agree with you all, you dont need a degree, but you are more likely to succeed if you do have one. I like to think of it as an automatic foot in the door. People wont hire you just because you have a degree, but they most likely wont even give you the interview unless you have a degree. Giving a few references to people how have succeeded isn't worthwhile either as these individuals didn't conform to the standard and started working for themselves. Would gates/dell or DP's own hogan been more successfull if they used standard means of employement? Who knows and cares at this point. Life and work are both games of chance and risk proportinal to the reward. The best bet is to remove the risks and keep the reward. Load your deck to to speak. A good education and hard work is the best way to do this. Otherwise learn these words "Thank you sir, drive around to window one"
It actually matters more than ever in today's world, at least in the US. But then, it depends what you want to do, your skills, talent, your social background, where you live, and so on.
A degree will help you get a job. In translation you can work for someone as a slave, making their pockets bigger. Entreprenuership is the way to go. Business = risk taking.
Sourced from the BRW last year (Business Magazine in Australia) something like 40% of the Top 100 Rich List of entreupenurs didn't have a degree. I'm sure they would agree with me in saying becoming a graduate doesnt make you successful. It's what you do with it that matters, just as it matters what you do in business without a degree. If you have the entreupenurial spirirt, why set yourself back 4 years studying something when you know what you already wanna do...
I fucking hope so I plan to major in physics and minor in bio or major in psych and minor in bio.... but i already have a job with a big pharma company, starting next year. includes room and board, and a six figure income. i just have to move to the states
IMO having a degree is an advantage. Personality, skills, and knowledge are much important in having a career.
My IT professor has told me: "It's not what you know but who you know that matters the most." Degree matters but not as much as your connections.
When an employer likes you and sees that you are excited about a job, he is more likely to overlook your lack of a degree.
In a world where people are starting to realize more and more that knowledge can be tought down the line.
I think this depends on your field too. For example you cant get away with saying you will be a heart surgeon and not have a degree. That obviously wont work. But being a self taught actor, keyboard player, programmer, or entrprenuer is entirely possible. Having a degree is important, if you plan on working for someone, but if not -- don't waste your time.
