Does CPM ads get shown to the same user time and time again!

    Hi,

I have been using this forum and have seen the same CPM ad appear about 10 - 15 times out of about every 100 pageviews.

So I was just wondering if anybody knows if the same ad gets shown to one unique visitor more than once.

The reasons for this is because I don't think it really should and I have started doing CPM advertising with Adsense.

Yes it does. I don't know that they have any frequency capping in place for CPM ads. I know I've personally seen my own cpm ads on sites dozens of times per session.

They need to put some frequency capping in place for CPM's. I don't think the CPM program is no where as good with no frequency capping.

IMO they need it for CPC ads as well. Just having it in place won't be enough - they need to let the users set their own caps.

Forget CPM. Unless you want to get burned. I junked CPM in the press world when I realised it had less and less to do with the amount of new business advertising was generating.

The only reason why I wanted to try CPM is so that I can manually select which sites I want to advertise on. The advantage of advertising with CPM with Adsense is more great and will most likely benefit you more than advertising with something like Fastclick on a CPM.

The reasons for this is because people now Fastclick as a CPM program. Due to this people place the ads on their site and don't worry as much about if they get alot of click-thrus or not.

With adsense people are trying their best at putting the ads in the best positions on their site just so that they can get more click-thrus. So if they are doing this then once the CPM ads are shown which may be yours then you are also likely to receive some good Click-thrus.

Plus you can also test it on a site per site basis. If one site doesn't do all that while then you can chuck then and try advertising on another.

The only problem is that I have tried bidding $1 CPM and I have not had one page impression yet and I have selected about 40 sites where some of them are rather big sites. I have waited for about 3 weeks now and I haven't even had a page impression.

I guess I better bid a little higher, but I can't go to high as I will then make a loss most probably.

    Thanks!

I belive that it will work aswell.

The best thing to do is to visit each site that you go to and see roughly where they have placed their ads. If they are in a very good and catchy location then I would consider that site to advertise on.

Also, I guess that once I start receiving page impressions and clicks from these ads I will then most probably visit the sites that are giving me the most CTR per 1000 impressions and see how they have opptimized the ads.

It will give me a good idea of how other sites are performing and I can she how they are doing it.

I was bidding $1.25 CPM, but have not even had 1 impression yet. I have now reasied this to $1.75. What are you current CPM adwords advertisers bidding at. I have a feeling that I still may not get any impressions on $1.75 and I can't go much further than that or I will make a loss.

That's a great place to start. The positioning of the ad block is one of the most important factors in a successful (in terms of CTR) campaigns.

It varies. I target sites where $1 will do it, others it takes $15. Depends on the current eCPM of the site as CPM ads compete with CPC ads.

Keep in mind that you're not always charged your max bid. In some cases I bid $10 on a set of sites but my actual CPM is below $6. If you really want to see how a site will work crank your bid to $10 and watch it for awhile to see what the numbers look like.

Whats your average CTR when doing CPM. I know that it varies depending on your sites topic and things but I would like to know.

I have worked it out that mine would be around 3%. If it is less than that then I will not be able to bid any higher.

I don't want to make a loss on this.

But, I don't know, but I have a feeling that it maybe better as I have manually selected the sites that have their ads in a good location plus my ad is related to the sites plus my ad is very catchy I believe.

I may tried bidding a little higher again so that I can start getting some impressions and then work from there.

I think I will do this because you can make better estimations with working with some impressions than working with none even if you make a loss doing it.

I'm running cpm campaigns on over 1,000 sites across multiple markets. I have a few hundred image ads (covering all size options) and over 3,000 text ads running on any given day. On average I'm adding 50 new sites a day and dropping between 25 - 100.

I've never calculated my "average" numbers across all sites - it really wouldn't tell me anything that would bring any benefit.

    OK!

You run alot of sites. What sort of sites are they? Are they all content type of sites that include articles or are they all on different topics that doesn't include articles.

For example, are they shopping sites, article sites, educational sites, etc.

I will be promoting around 20 or more sites with them soon. My results will be that I am hoping that the ads will convert into sales to my merchants products that I list on these sites and that I make a profit from it.

Oh, I see. I thought they may have all been yours. If they were then I guess you would have a much more larger work schedule than what you already have which is probably already alot.

Search marketing is how I make my living so client/work sites take the majority of my time now-a-days. The minute you get comfortable in this industry it's time to find a new industry!:)

I find that a few industries only are changing all the time. I find that it is best to try and keep a head of time. Try to be ahead of your competitors and you will do well.
