Does changing the content on a page affect its' rankings?

This is about changing the content on a page which has high rankings, and if this new 'modified' page would produce new/lower rankings?
Lets say you have some of your pages which are highly ranked for some keywords, and you have built good incoming links to these pages/ and have many decent links pointing to these pages.

Now lets say after a while you decide to modify the content/wording of the page(give the page a facelift) by changing its wording and perhaps some of the tags too, would this change the ranking of the page?

(Because although the incoming links are still pointing to the same page, they are pointing to different content, so contents + links are good for SEO)

eg, Lets say one page has good incoming links, ranks #6 for a term "cheap television aerial", and then you modify the content of that page, Will the NEW rank of this modified page possibly change? (which has the same amount of good incoming links in)

Don't ask Why I want to change the content of the page,- But if I wanted to keep these 'original rankings' can I do this using a redirect, so I don't loose rankings? How would I do this? - using a redirect, so I don't lose rankings on a new modified page?

    Thanks

Changing the content of a webpage affects the ranking of that webpage. In fact, it affects the ranking of your entire website! This is a very important aspect in the process of SEO, referred to as on-page search-engine optimisation.

Since content holds great importance in an on-page optimization, it may affect your site's rankings depending on what keywords you'll be changed in your content.

Thanks. Can a 301 direct be used to my advantage in this 'changing content' situation?

or is that a fake way, and google doesnt like it?

or doesnt google mind you using 301 directs to keep your 'original rankings' and doesnt penilize you for it?- or does it penilise you for it?

Relevance is key. Your on page SEO and content determines the relevance of your site to keywords searched. There is a specific mathematical formula )or algorithm) which calculates this based on the content of your page and other factors. Changing even the position of a keyword on your page can significantly affect the ranking of the page
